Monetary Compensation and the Court System

A court can award a victim of sexual harassment several remedies. An employee who has been terminated for complaining of harassment may be restored to her job. An employee may also receive an award of money for lost wages and emotional distress caused by the harassment. To justify such damages, an employee can supply proof that the harassment required treatment by a healthcare provider like a doctor or therapist. In less frequent instances, an employee may be awarded punitive damages if the employer acted with evil intent. In California, punitive damages awards of up to nine times the size of the compensatory damages award may be justified.
